Codlea is located at the north-western edge of Barsa Region, at the foot of Magura Hill. In Hungarian is called Feketehalom and the Germans here call Codlea in their dialect: Zäöeden - Zeiden. After Brasov, located at a distance of a near 15 km, Codlea is the most important town of Barsa Region by its historical past but also its political, economic and cultural development. By decree no. 5/1950, Codlea gets the title of City. The honorary title of Flower City is given to Codlea for its more than a century gardening skills.

The emblem of the city is Magura Codlea (germ. Zeidener Berg, hung. Feketehegy), which is the biggest hill of Persani mountain chain, with its height of 1294 m. Viewed from Brasov, Magura appears as an elongated ridge of hills on the north-south direction, but viewed from Vulcan, it resembles a steep and sharp cone.

The Coat of Arms of Codlea it is very similar to the one belonging to Brasov, representing a golden crown on a 13 roots log. The Coat of Codlea also has a star on each side of the crown, and the log has only 4-5 roots. The roots are the vow of fidelity made by the 4 Communes of Codlea's Seat of Court, to the Royalty House.

The seal of Codlea, which was used during 1740-1850, and the emblem sculpted in stone on City Hall's entrance, built in 1829, shows 4 roots. Subsequent representations, such as the flag of the man choir in 1912, shows 5 roots. This deviation is not justified in historical terms, being classified as a whim of the artist. The writting of Codlea's name over the centuries: 1377 Cidinis, 1387 Zerden, 1395 Cydino and Feketehalom, 1413 Ceydino, 1414 Cydinum, 1452 and 1463 Feketehalom, 1526 Czeyden, 1532 Czeydin, 1536 Czaydin, 1699 Kotla, 1808 Kottles, 1850 Kottle, 1854 Zeiden and Cotlea.
